And just like that, 3 weeks of Inpatient Internal Medicine has passed. If I could sum it up in one word, it would be "tiring." A typical day "on the floor" would go like this:
5:30am-Wake up
615-Take the bus to school
630-Log onto the electronic medical record system
645-Gather data (vitals, labs, results, overnight events) on the patients I'm following
8-Present patients to attending and the rest of the team
9-ROUND. Rounding is an oft-used term to describe an entire team of doctors+residents+students descending upon a patient in their hospital bed. We check in to see how they're doing, perform exams, and tell them the plan for the day
12p-Resident Noon Conference. Meaning an hour lunch in which we attend a lecture on a medicine topic.
1-630pm Accomplish all of the following:
-Help residents perform procedures as needed (paracentesis, stitches, ultrasounds, etc)
-"Tea Time" - all teams gather to discuss an interesting case or learn a particular topic
-Write notes. Notes all the time. Notes.
-Call consults, follow up with labs, call outside hospitals to get information, etc.
-Admit patients if on call. Meaning visit the ED to introduce yourself and the team to any new patients coming to the floor
-Read up on diagnoses and tests to run
-Write more notes.
-Visit the patient and check in midday
-Present patient again to attending before leaving
7-Home, dinner
8-Attempt to study but end up watching TV instead
10-sleep and repeat 6 days a week
