I've been swallowed by the beast that is surgery. I'm two weeks into my sub-I, with 2 weeks to go (and the rest of my life, I guess?)
Yesterday I got home at around noon for my Saturday duties, and was expecting not to go in again until Monday (yay for 1 day off a week!). But then my intern texts me that they were getting a liver and kidney at 0100, and that they needed all hands on deck. I was to be a part of the procurement, in which they fly to get the organs and then come back and do the surgery. Exciting and all, but I'm still sick (day 3 of antibiotics) and was hoping to sleep some this weekend and work on my research (big deadline on Monday) and work on my residency application....
So I tried to take some preemptive naps in my scrubs at home, bag packed and ready to go in preparation for spending all night in the OR (or on a jet). And then I get texts that the fellow is going on the procurement. And then that the liver was canceled. And then that the kidney got pushed back. Every time my phone pinged I was jarred awake. I woke up 8 times, basically every hour, only to go back to sleep in a weird coughing daze (I didn't take my codeine because I'm not supposed to drive on it).
At 6, I was told to come at 9. Now it's 8:30am, and I'm told it was pushed to 10. There goes my whole day, since it's a 6 hour procedure. I'm torn because I do want to participate, and to show my team that I'm committed, but at the same time, I didn't get any days off this week (we are supposed to get 1 per 7) and I don't have the same protection as the intern. It was supposed to be my day off, and I'm not even on call like the senior resident is. Plus I have other commitments as a student. Sigh.
All I can say is, sigh.
