Elderly VA Patient: "Are you Korean?"
Me: "Nope. I'm Taiwanese. My parents are from Taiwan."
VA Patient: "Oh, I can't tell the difference. All them Asians look alike."
Resident: "That's incredibly racist, sir."
VA Patient: "Oh? Well, she's kinda cute!"
Later, outside the room...
Resident: "Sorry about that. Old, racist, sexist patients...there's no excuse."
Me: "It's fine I'm used to it."
Resident: "That doesn't make it okay."
I guess I am being passive when I say that things like this no longer bother me. I'm glad the resident (a white male) stood up for me. But unless it's particularly egregious I don't really acknowledge it anymore...
