Beginnings of Fall

The weather is very slightly starting to cool down here, but I think I may be speaking too soon. Contrary to this graph of Iowa City weather trends, July wasn't unbearable, because I was indoors much of the time. However, the summer thunderstorms and sudden torrential downpours really get me here. I was walking to the bus stop the other day when it started thundering, and I could almost feel the electricity in the air. Better put up the umbrella, I thought. Sure enough, ten seconds after holding up my umbrella in the dryness (which looks silly but is really not), the sheets of water came down with such gusto that all sounds were drowned out by the rain.

It still baffles my mind that the seasons here are extreme, and I'll need to mentally prepare myself for snow again very soon.

We had a deeded body ceremony yesterday, and I somehow got cornered into speaking with the press. Must be a diversity thing, because yesterday there was also a Health Sciences Luncheon for Students of Color. Not sure who uses the term "-of color" anymore, except for us.
