Man, I wish I liked Anesthesiology more and Surgery less.
As an anesthesiologist, you get to be the in OR daily. You push drugs. It's not physical at all. You take frequent breaks. You sit and watch a monitor. There's no clinic. You're only at work as long as the operations are going (which usually isn't much later than 5pm, versus surgeons who have to take care of their patients after the surgery). You get paid more than surgeons. Most of the time the CRNAs do all the work for the doctor, and even the CRNAs make $170k per year. The residents are happy. They work 55 hours a week with no weekends. It's a cushy lifestyle, that's for sure.
But my favorite part about the Anesthesiology clerkship so far has been standing next to the surgeons and watching the surgery.
I'm not sure a 2-week clerkship is going to change my mind at this point. I sure wish I were more persuadable and more into lifestyle and money. But not really. I think I would probably hate labeling syringes and calculating doses of medications and turning knobs on a machine all day.
