OB Gyn Week 1 of 6

Hello from the outside.

I'm starting off on Gynecological Oncology, known as Gyn Onc. It's the surgical management of female patients with reproductive pathologies. Like ovarian tumors and uterine cancers and things like that. So it's 25% floor work 25% clinic and 50% surgeries. I thought it would be right up my alley, since I like surgery. And because it is a seamless transition from my previous surgery block--I really lucked out with the scheduling (can you imagine waking up at 4:30am after 5 weeks of 8-5pm outpatient clinics? Ugh, rough!)

Somehow upon walking into the physician workroom this morning, I felt out of place.

The OBGyn residents are all women, and they are all nice and happy. They look mostly rested and smile a lot. They wear accessories around their scrubs and put on music in the room and google whoever they interact with to see if they're hot or not.

It's a different world out there.

We'll see if being in the OR makes a difference tomorrow.

UPDATE: Being in the OR is similar to on surgery, only attendings don't yell or curse at the residents. That was a nice change. But the attendings also didn't teach me much because they were busy teaching the residents, who are not primarily trained as surgeons.

Anyhow, the week on Gyn/Onc went quickly. Conclusion: I don't think I will do a 4 year OBGYN residency (ugh babies and pregnant women) just to do another 3 year fellowship in Gyn Onc to finally get to the surgical aspect.
