My day started off with a BART equipment malfunction that caused me to scramble off the BART at 7:09am two stops before my own. I was the only one opening up The Office this morning. I literally ran one mile down Market Street in Downtown San Francisco in my work shoes, jumping over puddles and tripping over homeless people. So much for getting coffee before work.
I'm covering for two other coworkers this week, which means more work and less time to do it. I've also been sort of sick this week, but am pressured to keep coming in because no one else can make it.
At 7:22am (and only 5 minutes late, I might add!), breathless and sweaty, I opened the doors, turned off the alarm system, put on my white coat, and started seeing patients in an empty building by myself. But of course, the patients can't know that.
At 7:40am, the doctor arrived and saw the office in a state of disarray. She asked why I was the only one on duty--screening patients, doing eye scans, answering phones, making appointments. That is a question I ask myself all the time.
At 10:00am, I stapled my finger under my nail (how does that even happen?).
At 1:08pm, I ate lunch after working nonstop for nearly 6 hours. On lunch, I'm called several times to do other things. I regret not stepping out for McDonald's.
At 2:25pm, I got three paper cuts across my knuckles.
At 3:40pm, I was getting ready to leave when a call came in. My coworker asked me to take it even though I was on my way out. It turned out to be a patient calling with complications and unusual bleeding from a surgery. I scrambled to follow up and take symptoms.
At 3:45pm, I called the operating doctor to relay the symptoms. At 3:45 also, I was yelled at because the doctor didn't want to be disturbed.
At 3:48pm, the doctor called and apologized.
At 4:00pm, I went home. I still regret not getting McDonald's.
So...who wants to work at The Office with me? We're currently hiring.
